The record is a lot more somber than previous ones, but in a good way.

I believe that This Old Dog is a big step up for Mac in his storytelling ability. You just keep getting older, you just keep losing loved ones, you just keep turning into your dad.Ī lot of his songs, while enjoyable during a first listen, blend in with the others and end up very forgettable. Its a wise and mature document of how life goes on, even when youd rather hit pause, or rewind. The ease of this album, with all of its rather heavy, emotional subject matter, is attractive - the songs are as catchy as any hes made, but now they also deeply resonate. Sister is barely over a minute, but it can easily bring me to tears on a really bad day, Macs longing vocals over those sad, sad, sad guitar lines. This Old Dog changes up the formula enough to really stick with you it folds in genuine melancholy. I remember being underwhelmed by Salad Days because of this - it felt like lesser 2. He tends to favor a specific sound and style, and its a great one, but sometimes he stretches it thin.

Truthfully, Mac is a talented songwriter. Hes a goofy, press happy, lovable etc etc hipster whos publicity stunts and the like seem to take as much precedence as his music, if not more.īut none of that matters when this indie-in-late-2000s mascot makes something as mature and lovely as This Old Dog, one of the decades best indie albums. Heck yeah Mac Fav tracks: moonlight on the river, wolf who wears sheeps clothes Published. Mac DeMarco is a talented man and This Old Dog proves that. This old Dog is Macs most introspective album yet, dealing with subjects like growing up and problems with his father. Mac has also been able to mature as a vocalist, understanding his shortcomings and working with the abilities he has. The only real problem I had was maybe the length of Sister, I feel like the idea was good and could be fleshed out just a little.
